Volunteering in Tanzania at 17 years old

I signed up to volunteer with the Mighty Roar on the childcare programme, in Tanzania and to anyone contemplating booking a trip with the Mighty Roar; DO IT! Being only 17 years old, my parents were obviously very worried about the prospect of me going alone for 2 weeks to a country I have never been to before. But, the pre departure support from TMR, especially the video call, was invaluable in settling their nerves (and mine).

3 weeks volunteering with sea turtles in Sri Lanka

I volunteered in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks where I had the opportunity to work on the sea turtle project. Before I arrived in Sri Lanka the team were helpful in answering any questions, providing loads of info and getting all volunteers in contact with each other. My favourite moments were watching the turtles being released and spending time all together in the evenings. I would recommend this programme to everyone. I felt safe my entire trip, the food and accommodation were great and it was a lovely group of people.

Helping in kindergartens in South Africa

I travelled to South Africa to volunteer in Cape Town for 3 weeks. I volunteered with the nursery children to give me an insight of a future career around safeguarding children; it was the best experience of my life. I did everything I could possibly do in Cape Town and recommend them all! I went shark swimming, elephant walking, safari swim, bungy jump, wine tasting, rugby watching, kayaking, surfing, karaoke and more. I am itching to go back!

Volunteering with elephants in Thailand

I chose to volunteer for two weeks with The Mighty Roar at their elephant sanctuary in Thailand. I wanted to spend some time working closely with elephants as part of my time travelling around South-East Asia. After carrying out extensive research into ethical sanctuaries, I decided on The Mighty Roar, and I’m so glad that I did! My time there was amazing and it feels so rewarding to know that I have helped these animals in some way.

Mental health volunteering in Ghana

I had the privilege of spending three weeks volunteering in Ghana on the mental health/psychology programme. I met the most wonderful people during this unforgettable trip, receiving endless amounts of kindness and generosity from the local community, hospital staff, other volunteers and The Mighty Roar team in Busua. This opportunity offered me a collection of experiences and lessons that I will take with me for the rest of my life.

Marine conservation in Greece

I did the Marine Conservation in Greece, I honestly can’t even put into words how amazing it was! When I first arrived I was feeling quite anxious, but once I met the other volunteers I immediately felt at ease. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. I made life long friends and I can’t even express how much I valued my time there. I was really sad to leave, but I felt like I was leaving with an incredible experience under my belt.

Rosie's story

Helping in the TMR kindergarten in Sri Lanka

I volunteered on the childcare [rogram in Sri Lanka for two weeks over summer. This was my first time travelling solo, and I could not recommend The Mighty Roar more as a chance to make friends and adjust to travelling in a supportive but independent environment. The hands-on support of both the local and external teams made this trip the best it can be. If you are thinking about doing it, go for it! You really will not regret it!

Wildlife volunteering in Namibia

In September I went to the Wildlife Sanctuary and Reserve in Namibia. I’ve struggled with anxiety quite badly for the past few years, so this was massive step out of my comfort zone to do this by myself but it has made me grow as a person and I would 100% return! There were about 40-50 other volunteers there which they were all lovely, I made some amazing friends out there who I’m still in contact with now.

Travel & Volunteer experience in Bali

  • Bali
  • December 2024
During my gap year I knew I wanted to try something new and travel, but I really didn’t know how. I researched into lots of programmes and found The Mighty Roar. They were really helpful and provided me with loads of information and even Zoom calls, I cannot recommend them enough. I was extremely nervous about travelling on my own to Bali (and so were my parents) but The Mighty Roar reassured me with the organisation and constant updates within the programme.
