Turtles, Tuk-Tuks and
Temples in
Sri Lanka

A magical volunteer experience!

I spent two incredible weeks volunteering with turtles in Sri Lanka through Mighty Roar, and it was an unforgettable experience I would recommend to everyone. The Mighty Roar Team was extremely helpful in addressing my pre-departure questions, making the entire process smooth and easy! Additionally, TMR take great care of you through their detailed handbook explaining everything about your trip and volunteer experience. There is also a WhatsApp chat you can join to meet your fellow volunteers as well as an arrival list on Facebook so there are many ways to meet new friends before you even arrive in Sri Lanka!

"I would highly recommend a TMR volunteer programme and experience to anyone looking for a unique and rewarding adventure."

Upon landing at Colombo International Airport, I was met by the friendly Mighty Roar drivers, Charith and Mammu, who made the transfer to our accommodation stress-free. Their kindness and warm smiles reassured me immediately as it was my first time navigating long haul trip on my own! The perfect start to an amazing Sri Lankan adventure.

Our host Ayomi and her lovely family, went above and beyond to make us all feel at home in their home. They made us feel welcome and comfortable from day one, providing home-cooked meals every night and breakfast and lunch during the week. It always amazed me how Ayomi remembered every single volunteers name so quickly (there were about 70 of us) and she among the other family members was so personable and absolutely lovely to be around.

The accommodation was peaceful and secure, with a night guard, personal lockers, and mosquito nets for every bed as well as lockable rooms and en-suites. Ayomi was always available if we needed anything whether that was via WhatsApp or in person, which made the stay even more comfortable.

The location of the accommodation was perfect - located on the beautifully quiet and peaceful beachfront of Akurala, but just a 10-minute tuk-tuk or bus ride to the bustling tourist town of Hikkaduwa, where there’s plenty to do, from beach clubs and brunch spots to shopping and nightlife. Personally we loved the Citrus Beach Club - it’s free entry for Mighty Roar volunteers and it’s a great way to cool and wind down after a morning of volunteering - they also do great cocktails! We also loved “ Sunny Side up” for a great brunch spot!

For a more cultural experience, the historic towns of Galle or Mirissa are only around 30 minutes away by bus just outside the accommodation, offering a rich glimpse into Sri Lankan art and history. The buses are super fun and a highlight —by the time you leave Mighty Roar, you'll have mastered the art of jumping on and off Sri Lankan buses like a local! The trains are great too.

Mighty Roar organized plenty of fun activities, from orientation drinks on the first night to kayaking and surfing to evening beach volleyball and karaoke!! When you first arrive at Mighty Roar you will have the opportunity to take part in an action packed orientation weekend of travelling the local area (which is included) - you will explore museums, waterfalls, jungles as well as Buddhist temples, local moonstone mines and cinnamon factories. Not to mention, you can enjoy the lovely local food with fellow volunteers and meet cool new people.

You can also optionally take part in the planned TMR trips during the weekends - I loved it and highly recommend them. It was a great way to explore more of Sri Lanka and get to know other volunteers.

Volunteering in Sri Lanka with Mighty Roar was an unforgettable experience. It’s a perfect mix of meaningful travel, great people, great company and beautiful scenery and culture.

I would highly recommend a TMR volunteer programme and experience to anyone looking for a unique and rewarding adventure. I also noticed TMR is exceptionally more ethical in their environmental conservation efforts than some other volunteer programmes - this was especially evident on the Turtle Conservation Project which was great to see !

Ultimately though, TMR is great fun and If you’re thinking about going to Sri Lanka with TMR - you won’t regret it. Your TMR adventure awaits you in the lovely Akurala with the even more lovely host family - Enjoy :)
