I recently volunteered in the small town of Akurala, Sri Lanka and there was so much to offer it was an incredible experience! It was firstly such an eye opening experience living within the same area as Ayomi and her lovely family who were all so warm and loved helping us with anything we needed!

Our family of four (kids ages 9 and 11) stayed at The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka and participated in the sea turtle project. We made incredible friends and had a fabulous week! We were lucky enough to encounter a large green turtle laying eggs on the beach and witness baby sea turtles hatching in the hatchery. We also buried eggs and even got to release the fresh hatchlings to the sea. It was remarkable!

The activities offered during the stay are well worth it and enrich the experience.

The staff is A+! Ayomi is organized, kind, positive and a wealth of information.

Our family of 4 worked on the turtle project in Sri Lanka for one week. It was a wonderful week. Staff was very friendly and went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. Food and accomodations were basic as expected. We got to bury turtle eggs and were lucky to be around when a hatch occured so we were able to release the baby turtles! Quite an experience for us and our kids.

We spent three weeks at the Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka in February, working on the sea turtle, kindergarten and English teaching projects. As a family of four we felt so included and welcomed by Ayomi and her team and made so many unforgettable memories. From baby turtles to tuk tuk rides, and sunset swims to sunrise beach patrols it was such a memorable trip. Upon getting home to the UK we were craving some sort of dahl or curry as the food served everyday was so good. As a family in one room we had a bit more space than in some of the dorm rooms and were very pleased to have good working air-conditioning (essential!) and excellent mosquito nets on all the beds. The Sri Lankan laid back attitude to pretty much everything took a few days to get used to but once in the groove of it even hot and busy days were no real effort. Our main regret was not having more time to travel around other parts of the country after our time at TMR, though the weekend safari trip (great fun!) did help us see more beyond the coast. During our second weekend away (in Mirissa) we actually felt like we were missing the Mighty Roar as it really felt like a home whilst we were there. A wonderful place with wonderful people.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. They make sure you have everything you need and help you whenever they can. I did the turtle project and found it to be ethical and worthwhile.  The food is yummy and they always have vegetarian food. The work was tiring in the morning for an hour or two and then you have the rest of the day to do as you please. They organise fun activities that you can choose to join in on if you want. The family are very friendly lovely people.

I loved the immersive culture at the mighty roar. The staff and family are very welcoming which made it very easy to settle into Sri Lankan life. This was my first ever time volunteering abroad so I was very nervous about what to expect. I am so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone because the memories I made in the last three weeks will last a lifetime.

I came to Sri Lanka with my partner and we were both welcomed with open arms by the TMR community in Akurala. We also made friends almost instantly with the other volunteers, who became like family towards the end. The TMR host family in Sri Lanka were amazing at helping me and my partner to experience the true Sri Lankan lifestyle. In addition to the planned activities outside of volunteering such as the weekend trips, kayaking, football, yoga, meditation, surfing and cricket, we took part in additional activities such as cooking with the aunty, catching fish for everyone to share at dinner, gardening, climbing Adam’s Peak during the pilgrimage season and a small boat safari to see the fruit bats.

Our food was kindly prepared daily for us at TMR and tasted delicious.

We took part in the sea turtle conservation project in Sri Lanka which was run amazingly with a really informative and helpful leader, Mammu. Our main duties involved participating in group beach cleans, evening beach patrols, hatchery watching, eco brick making, recording information on turtle sightings and hatching and releasing baby turtles into the sea. I also got to participate in the teaching programme during my stay which was also a very rewarding experience.

A huge thankyou to Ayomi, Thaksala, Neranjan, Mammu and the rest of the TMR community for this truly unforgettable experience.

Just returned from Sri Lanka after having a fantastic time doing turtle conservation with a chance to participate in some of the other volunteer projects. Hard work but rewarding with plenty of time to enjoy other projects.

Accommodation was basic but clean and comfortable. Food was good so much so I watched “auntie” in the kitchen to get a few tips and I never felt I was in the way.

Nothing was too much trouble for Ayomi, Mamoo and Tasci (hope I have spelt that correctly) - trips to waterfalls, boat trips watching the sunset in some fantastic places.

It was lovely to live and work with such a wide background and age range of people - you’re never too old! Overall a fantastic experience looked after by fantastic people

I've seen turtles make their way from the ocean under the moonlight to make their nests and lay their eggs. I've watched hatchlings make their way back to the ocean. What a rewarding experience.

I've joined the group for beach clean ups. Removing plastic bags and other rubbish to make the ocean safer for sea turtles.

I've made good friends while I've been on the project.

Special mention for the staff. Very friendly. Always smiling. Aways willing to help.

The team in Sri Lanka are really excellent - so helpful, nothing was too much trouble, it was easy to get a tuk tuk into town or a taxi further afield and the drivers very reliable. Pick-up from the airport very smooth despite a delay on our part. We were working on the turtle conservation project and released 72 baby turtles into the sea, an incredible experience. The other volunteers were delightful and a nice mix - mostly young (pre and post uni) but not exclusively. The weekend trip was really interesting and action packed - we could never have seen this much of Sri Lanka had we tried to organise it ourselves and it was nice to go in a group. Loved the elephant safari. The accommodation was fine and the food was good.

I have just returned to the UK following 4 weeks of volunteering on the street dog and sea turtle conservation projects with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. Ayomi and the whole local team were wonderful throughout my time there. The friendly and welcoming nature of everyone involved on the project made my first volunteering trip the great experience that it was!

I especially loved working on the street dog project and will miss all the dogs and puppies I got to feed and care for, as well as being a valued member of the team.

The accommodation is basic but comfortable. The Sri Lankan curries served were thankfully mild and very tasty! I enjoyed coming together with all the other volunteers at meal times when Ayomi would often use this time to socialise and check in with us.

A tip about clothing; if you are working on the street dog or sea turtle projects, wearing clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is not expected, but if you are working on any of the child care projects you will need to. If you are considering volunteering with The Mighty Roar on any of their projects in Sri Lanka I would definitely say go for it :)

It was an amazing month in Sri Lanka with plenty experiences in culture and nature. Everyone made us feel welcomed and wanted us to be happy. I really appreciated that you can easily join more than one project, so I was able to do turtles and childcare. It was great to see the outcome and effort of your work in seeing baby turtles hatch and releasing them, so that all the beach cleanings were worth it. It also always put a smile on your face during work with little energised children. And it was absolutely cool to meet the other volunteers, we had a great community! On the weekends you could join a trip (I did the hill country and safari one) that showed you as many different sides from Sri Lanka as possible, I especially loved the Safari as well as visiting Ella. But we also went to different cities on our own what made your group stick together again. Luckily we were able to be part of the perahera festival which takes place once a year. Overall an unforgettable time and also perfect for the first time discovering the world and travelling on your own.

I was very worried before travelling as it was my first solo trip but the team organise everything beforehand making life easier. What an amazing experience! This was my first time doing anything like this and I can now say that I will definitely be doing it again thanks to an amazing team! In the 2 weeks I spent in Sri Lanka I was able to explore everything on my list during the weekend trips and days out that Mamu helped us plan! Ayomi and Taxi made me feel at home with daily check ins and updates of our week.

The turtle conservation project was everything I wanted and more, I was able to get the hands on experience that I had always hoped for, the highlight for me definitely being the release of hundreds of baby turtle throughout my stay. Would definitely recommend if you are considering going!

Best three weeks of my life - the accommodation, trips and volunteering responsibilities were amazing. These things balance well with the freedom you are also granted staying with TMR in Sri Lanka.  A typical day as a turtle volunteer would be that I would get up, meet friends under the roofed social area and then explore nearby places during the day (Galle, Hikkaduwa) and being back in time either for planned activities (games, small trips) or turtle duties. Personally I found it to be a tremendous deal and fantastic for young travellers such as myself.

This was my first time volunteering with a company and I’m so glad i went with The Mighty Roar. The process of getting everything sorted before the trip was very simple and the London office was easily contactable via email if I had any problems.

I did the sea turtle conservation programme and I loved every second of it. The night time beach patrols with Mamu were so relaxing and we were lucky enough to see a sea turtle head back into sea after laying her eggs. Hatchery watch was also good, especially when the babies hatched. You had to do a beach clean each day but I also enjoyed this as there are lots of dogs along the beach that keep you company whilst doing it.

The accommodation itself was great. Ayomi and her family genuinely care about the volunteers and if I had any issues they were addressed. I stayed here for two weeks but would have loved to have stayed longer as it wasn’t long enough. Ayomi also puts on one weekly activity which you can go to, we did a boat safari and kayaking.

If you have the chance to go on any weekend trips you should. We were only able to go on the one trip which was the cultural triangle trip. This is a great way to get to know the other volunteers and see more of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka itself is beautiful, I felt safe whilst being there and everyone is very friendly.

I can’t wait to return and thank the mighty roar for my experience.

10/10 would recommend this experience. Ayomi is one of the sweetest people, always smiling and welcomes everyone into her home. She puts in a lot of effort to organise things outside of the standard hours of the volunteering program from meditation with a monk to various sports activities. We also spent a lot of time with Mammu whilst on the turtle program. He is a wonderful person with a great sense of humour and is always checking in on how your day is going. The rest of the family and staff were so welcoming, kind and show a genuine interest in getting to know all of the volunteers. I would suggest that anyone going in to this program, goes in with an open mind and embraces all of the experiences offered to you. I found that there was enough time to explore Akurala and the surrounding areas whilst also getting the most from your volunteering program. Sri Lanka is a beautiful place and this is a trip that I will forever be grateful for. I can not wait to return in the future and would recommend it to all.

As a family of 3. Myself and daughters aged 11 and 13, we had an amazing experience. I absolutely fell in love with Sri Lanka!! Be prepared that this is a volunteering experience and not a lay by the pool type of holiday. It was very active. An experience that has taught myself and my daughters about the true Sri Lanka and not just the tourist side. It took us a few days to get into routine and find our bearings. But then we settled very quickly and even litter picking on the beach (just across the road) no longer seemed like a chore, but something we actually looked forward to each day. The work with the turtles was just amazing, with clutches hatching every night in November, when we were there.

And to be able to swim with the full grown turtles at Turtle beach, just 10 mins away in the mini bus (or 15 mins away by Tuck tuck). Was something you just can't imagine unless you experience it for yourself!!

The hosts were so welcoming and spoke clear English. Plans and timings were much more relaxed than how we are in England. Which as a very organised person I took a few days to adapt to. But then i just started enjoying, going with the flow.

We soon got used to the Sri Lankan food served daily. Apart from my youngest. But there is a place called Sunnys that is five mins walk away when exiting to your right which serves chips, pizza and much more.

It feels like a real little community at the accommodation and felt like home by the time we were due to leave. We didn't want to leave!!! Trainers (a must), coffee, juice, dry noodles are some of the things you might want to take for whilst you adjust.

Once in a life time experience and I very much hope to go back to Sri Lanka to visit the village again in years to come.

I did the volunteering and travel program for two weeks in Sri Lanka. Great experience. First week was amazing volunteering with sea turtles, was a once in a lifetime opportunity! The mighty roar accommodation was really nice and great beaches nearby to chill, but also Ayomi organised activities for us to do, like the waterfall for example, which was a lot of fun. Second week was a lot of travelling and time on the bus but saw so much of Sri Lanka so it was worth it. Karu was a great tour guide and made sure we were all happy and having a fun time!! Highlights include the safari, stick fishing, herbal garden and shop, tea factory and more. Recommend to everyone!!

The sea turtle conservation at Akurula Beach is an incredibly rewarding, eye opening and humbling experience. Not only has it been fascinating to learn more about the endangered species and the lengthy conservation efforts to protect them, it has been a rare and beautiful experience to see both adult and baby turtles in their natural habitat. Your tasks will mainly be during the morning or late evening, meaning you have a big chunk of the day to contribute to other local projects (such as protecting wild dogs), or to explore the local area.

Ayomi and her family, and the rest of the local team here are some of the kindest, and most helpful and caring people I have ever met. They go to extraordinary efforts to ensure their volunteers are safe and have the best possible experience here. They really do not get enough credit for the wonderful experience they host.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing a life-changing volunteering trip in Sri Lanka with The Mighty Roar Volunteering Company. I cannot recommend this organisation enough to anyone looking for a fulfilling and rewarding travel experience.

The volunteering opportunities were incredible, and working with turtles and children was an unforgettable experience. The volunteer centre was run by Ayomi, and her welcoming family who provided numerous opportunities to get involved with the community and activities. In addition to the volunteering, I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to get involved with the community celebrations and help identify sites for a new volunteering project focused on coral conservation.

The accommodation had cool and comfortable rooms with air conditioning and wifi, and they served delicious food. The staff were incredible, always helpful and friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

I also went in a 9-day trip around Sri Lanka with the company, led by Karu, which was amazing. We got to experience so much, including an elephant sanctuary, orphanages, safari, temples, waterfalls, and climbing Adam's Peak in Ella. Climbing Tiger Rock was a highlight, and visiting the spice gardens, tea plantations, and precious rock mines was a fantastic experience. We even got to relax and try new things, such as zip-lining and the swing over the rock cliff.

Overall, my experience with The Mighty Roar was exceptional. I feel fortunate to have had this experience and can't thank them enough for providing it. I highly recommend this organisation to anyone looking for a unique and fulfilling travel experience.

The Turtle Sanctuary in Sri Lanka was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The TMR team are so supportive and, after some training, really do leave you to have your own experiences. I travelled with my family, including three teenagers, who all were able to get fully involved. The facilities are great and there is a real community feel, both guest and local team. It's not all work. There is plenty of opportunity to relax and get under the skin of the local Sri Lankan people who are so friendly. Highly recommended!

I am a returning volunteer and this time I brought my mum and brother with me. We did the sea turtle program and we found it extremely fulfilling. The staff in sri lanka work extremely hard and are passionate about what they do. A big shout out to indica for working day and night keeping the turtles and dogs safe & cared for. Another staff member Mamou organised some amazing experiences for us such as a river safari and bat tour! Ayomi and charith have been so warm and welcoming, they work so tirelessly to make the volunteers feel at home and to make sure the programs are well organized. It warmed my heart to see how amazing everyone in sri lanka was with my 10 year old brother, he grew more confident and chatty as time went on. I'm so excited to see what the future holds for the might roar sri lanka. Once the dog sanctuary is up and running I'll be back! I'm gonna miss it here so much and it truly feels like my home away from home.

Wow what an amazing time we had with Ayomi, Charith and the team at The Mighty Roar. From our first conversations with Chris in the UK to our arrival at TMR Sri Lanka it’s been a pleasure.

Such wonderful life experiences for our whole family. We would highly recommend it for anyone and especially families. From seeing turtles lay eggs on the beach to seeing them hatch in the hatchery to releasing them into the sea. Just amazing to see the whole lifecycle.

As well as the turtles we also had time with the whole TMR team when we arrived - where they took us away for an amazing weekend experience to see waterfalls and ancient palaces as well as visiting a temple with them.

We would highly recommend and we hope what we did with TMR has a positive impact to the local community as well as to the survival rates for the turtles, which are simply majestic.

As a older female traveller , I couldn't have had a better experience than with The Mighty Roar. From the moment I was collected at the airport, I felt looked after like one of the family .

I did the turtle conservation, which gave me so much contact with these graceful creatures, far more than I expected ( and it's by no means guaranteed!) Our supervisors Mammu and Indicke support you and are great company

The hours can be long but you have plenty of free time to explore the area or take part in other organised activities , just be aware of extra charges if you are travelling on a budget ! The centre is in a great location and the food is home cooked with vegetarians catered for. There is a fabulous beach across the road and the tourist town of hikkadua close by it's easy to get around ( the buses are an experience all on their own! and you can join in with organised trips or easily arrange your own

The program is perfect for gap year students as you can change to the other projects if you want some variety - it's easy to get involved with the dog welfare or child care schemes . I have met some truly inspirational people among my fellow volunteers and hope to stay in touch with them

Sri Lanka is a beautiful, friendly and welcoming place and every day was different - just an adventure!

I cannot recommend enough ! TMR overall but especially the Sri Lankan turtle program. Chris was on hand to help us before we left and throughout the entire journey 24/7. And when we got there the entire family were so welcoming and you could tell they genuinely care! Everything was made so easy, I made so many friends, and I have a family in Sri Lanka for life, Charith, Mammuh, Chuttji, Hector, Renu, Karu, auntie, uncle and everyone else involved are the kindest, most helpful people in the world and have taught me so many things about nature, cooking, values and their amazing culture, this is much more than a holiday and I recommend everyone visits them at least once in their life ! Even if it’s just for the beautiful beach sunset right across the road from their beautiful house :)

Me and my friend volunteered with the turtles in Sri Lanka, it was such an incredible experience!! We were able to watch turtles lay eggs on the beach, release hatched baby turtles into the sea and go and visit different places and interact with the turtles (sanctuary, turtle beach).

All the staff were so nice and organised lots of trips in our first week which allowed us to see more of Sri Lanka (you do have to pay for these, but it isn’t a lot of money).

In our second week, we had a lot more free time, it would have been nice to have some more organised trips, but it did give us an opportunity to do our own thing.

The food was so good, (although a bit repetitive) and they catered for vegetarians, which was perfect for me.

Overall, it really was an amazing two weeks, we met so many people and made so many good friends. I loved every second, thank you to all the staff who helped us have the best time!!

We were lucky to release baby turtles on our last day which was amazing! The staff were super friendly and treated me and my friends like family! We could have done a little bit more on the sea turtle programme, we could have helped the staff more. But overall it felt like a dream🥰

Tmr go above and beyond what they need to provide. The 4 weeks I spent with them was an unforgettable experience and one I enjoyed so much I am taking my mum and brother with me to do it again this year. The rooms were spotless upon arrival, the food tasted amazing, the team super friendly and approachable. They planned a bonfire for me on the beach for my birthday and gave me aloe Vera from there garden for my sunburn these are just a few examples of the kindness and good service they provided. They was always so generous with there time and made sure we had an unforgettable experience. The programs were geared towards what the community needed which I know isn't always the case with volunteer holiday companies. This alone makes me pick the mighty roar again and again for my volunteer experience. So excited to go back to sri lanka and see how the tmr programs have evolved to help the community even more. (The date of my project was 2019) I go back this year (April 1st 2023)

Faultless week with the TMR Team in Sri Lanka. Karu, Zoyza, Mammu, Indika, Ayomi and the rest of the team were exceptional. I truly felt like I became part of a family for life.

Food was amazing, dessert was offered at every lunch and dinner. Tea and coffee whenever we wanted it. Fresh fruit etc.

The actual turtle experience was brilliant, managed to see about 6 turtles come up the beach and lay eggs. Got to take part in burying them in the hatchery too. The team allow you to be as hands on as you’d like.

The beach clean each day was also very eye opening, and highly appreciated by the locals and even some of the Sri Lankan scouts/cubs who were also cleaning up the beach.

Met some incredible people, and the experience allowed us all to bond properly and meet so many locals (who were all so welcoming).

Can’t recommend this experience highly enough.

I’ve just spent a week at The Might Roar in Sri Lanka and it has been absolutely amazing! The staff are so lovely and helpful and I have loved getting to know them all. It has also been a pleasure to experience how the Sri Lankan’s live. The accommodation is very nice and clean and is situated in a gorgeous area opposite a beach. I did the turtle conservation and it was fantastic. The whole experience was very ethical. One week here was certainly not enough. Thank you so much TMR team for the most wonderful week.

We have just returned from three weeks on the turtle conservation project in Sri Lanka. We did this as a family, with children aged 12 and 10. The experience as a whole was incredible, and I would recommend it to anyone.

We felt completely looked after by the TMR team in Akurala. Ayomi was quick to respond to queries on the group chat, while Chutti and Mammu were always on hand to show us what to do and help when needed.

In terms of accommodation and comfort, the rooms are basic (though all have air conditioning except during the scheduled power cuts), but we only really needed them for sleep and short breaks from the heat. The sense of community within the establishment was amazing. Our kids made friends quickly with kids of the two other families who were there at the same time, and we felt perfectly safe to let them play in and around the restaurant area and the wider complex. The food provided was great. We were given many different vegetables we had never sampled before, cooked in interesting ways, along with chicken and tuna, rice and noodles which were also very good. The kids appreciated the copious amounts of ice-cream provided after each meal!

Days and evenings were never dull. Most of the turtle duties are later on, with night walks along the beach to check for signs of eggs being laid (always accompanied by a staff member), and checking the hatchery for baby turtles. When not volunteering we made frequent tuktuk visits to Hikkaduwa (turtle beach!) and local restaurants/bars, and as well as the weekend trips on offer, we also frequently had the opportunity to do additional things such as a raft ride to see bats on the river and visits to local Buddhist temples. There is sometimes a small extra charge for these things, but well worth it.

More than any other trip I've been on, I really felt part of the community and feel like I learned so much about the place and people. For example after helping with the teaching one day, two of the boys insisted I should see their houses in the village, and I was made to feel incredibly welcome, being shown the house by their families and given coconut to drink. It was little experiences like this that elevated the adventure beyond anything I've done before.

Spent a brilliant 4 weeks in Sri Lanka with The Mighty Roar on the Sea Turtle programme. This programme was probably the most structured and I was fortunate to see several green turtles laying at night and release many hatchlings into the sea. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The only constructive criticism I would leave is that a minority of volunteers seem to lack responsibility in their daily tasks with little recourse for their lack of input.

The staff look after you well and offer extra activities that we weren’t expecting.

The food is good, luckily i like that cuisine, it is quite samey samey but you can go elsewhere for other meals and cuisines.

The accommodation was fine, nothing fancy but good a/c and a hot shower.

The turtle project was great, we luckily got to see a fee turtles nesting and hatchlings being born, and burying some eggs ourselves. I think it needs a little more organisation though as some people clearly hadnt bothered to keep up with their duties/paperwork etc.

I stayed in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks doing the sea turtle programme, and I wish I could have stayed for longer ! leading up to the trip Chris answered any questions/concerns I had, and always within 24 hours !!

The country is beautiful and everyone looked after us so well 😊 I loved staying with Charith’s family, it was like having a home away from home. everyone I met I got along with, and I’ve made lifetime long friends 💞 For my first time travelling abroad and all on my own, I couldn’t have chosen a better company to volunteer with!

The sea turtle programme is 100% ethical and everything they are doing is so beneficial to helping the future of the turtles 🐢

I spent 4 weeks at TMR Sri Lanka. Those 4 weeks were 4 of my most enjoyable weeks ever. For my first 2, I did the Turtle conservation program which I really loved. It has a really well organised timetable which gives you the best opportunity to see baby turtles being released and turtles laying eggs on the beach on as many occasions as possible. For my second 2 weeks volunteering I participation in the childcare (kindergarden) project. This, for me, was better than I could ever had imagined, as it was always such a wholesome experience. Whether it was helping the kids colour in, or outside playing with them, they love every minute of you being there and spent the whole time with a massive smile on their faces.

Another reason why I enjoyed TMR so much was because of the amazing people I met. We had some great times in Simple, playing cards after dinner, or taking a trip into Hikkaduwa on an afternoon. I can confidently say that I know I have met people that I will stay in contact with and for sure see again when we get home to England.

As for the local team; Chutti, Mammo and Hector made the experience even more fun and enjoyable. You’d never go a day without them making you laugh, especially Chutti (pineapple, ice cream). I am so grateful for all the hard work that they put in, whilst we are there and behind the scenes.

The manager in Sri Lanka, Mini, is really easy to talk to whether you have any problems, queries, or would just like a chat. Mini really is a massive part of TMR and with her desire to make every day better than the last for the volunteers, and her genuinely being one of the kindest and funniest people I’ve met, she really makes it a better place.

So a massive thank you especially to the local team for making this an experience that I will never forget :)

I had an overall amazing experience at tmr in Sri Lanka. I spent my time participating in the sea turtle project where you have to look after varying species of turtles. This is not the only project at tmr they also support childcare and teaching projects for instance. If you disclose that you want to switch around your project this is also relatively flexible. Projects is not everything at tmr in Sri Lanka. It’s a good mix of working time and time that you can explore this beautiful country, or just lay on the beach for a bit.

The part I will probably miss the most is the people I met there. Everyone there has to some extent the same intentions as you, so chances are you will get along with mostly everyone. I’ am not only talking about the volunteers the local staff (hector, mammu, and chutti) were always there for you to make you laugh or if you needed something. Saying goodbye to them for me was one of the harder parts.

The organization on the ground is run by Mini. Genuinely one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Had an absolutely amazing time thanks to her and the staff.

My new home ! I love this program with my whole heart ! Not only were they passionate about doing good and genuinely helping the wildlife and surrounding community, they also care so much about every single volunteer ! 

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with so much to offer and the TMR group will tell you all the local tips and tricks to see the nicest places at the best times, the organised weekend trips are a great way to see so much in so little time, there would be no way I could have done so much without the help from the local team. 

The Accomodation is a 10 second walk from the beach and the food is amazing, there are communal areas and also quiet places for you to have downtime, rooms are clean and perfectly located as well has having 24/7 support. I felt so welcomed into their family and every single person there would go so far out of their way to help you ! 

Chris and Mini will help you throughout the whole process and answer every stupid question you have before during and after. The whole group are the most welcoming family you’ll ever meet and if you’re lucky you might even get a quick cooking lesson from Renu (mum). Hector is the kindest soul who cares for every living creature and will teach you so much about his religion and take you on his exciting daily dog feeds (he will get excited about the chickens and cats too). Mammuh will tell you all the fun facts and stories whilst on your nightly beach patrols and can protect you against anything (great to have on speed dial). Chuttji is the funniest man alive, doubles as a (questionable) doctor and is a great dancer, he will help you in every way possible but don’t trust him because he’s the biggest cheat when playing uno or blackjack. Karu and Suda are the best tour guides in town! Auntie and uncle are the sweetest people going and uncle will never turn down an opportunity to show u all his cats. Charith has done an amazing job with TMR and I would recommend it to literally anyone, I can’t wait to go back I really miss my second family !

Would I recommend The Mighty Roar? Oh my GOD yes!

I did the Turtle Volunteer programme for 2 weeks in Sri Lanka and had the most amazing experience that I will never forget.

We stayed with such a gorgeous family who really took care of us and were looked after by the most wonderful team (Mini, Mammu, Chutti & Hector) and I miss them all already.

Chris, the owner of TMR, was so helpful and it was an added bonus that he was out in Sri Lanka whilst I was there so that I could personally apologise for all of my annoying emails!

I made so many new friends and future travel buddies which is an absolute bonus.

I also felt that volunteering truly made a difference in this country and the team really try hard to educate the locals on sustainability too, which is so important.

I'm looking at booking the next project now and have been recommending this to everyone 💕

Unfortunately I only stayed for 1 week and there were no wild turtles around, but nevertheless it was an amazing experience and we ended up having some contact with turtles in a sanctuary.

We had such an amazing time at the Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. Before we even arrived in Sri Lanka we were supported virtually by Chris and Charith in helping us to organize what we needed to ensure that we could get to Sri Lanka safely. We felt the process was very professional and Chris certainly helped with all our concerns surrounding the local UK restrictions around travelling abroad. 

When we arrived in Charith was a fantastic host and friend, messaging us to ensure that before we arrived for the volunteering that if we needed any help with anything he was just at the end of a phone. 

 When we arrived for the week of the volunteering we couldn't have felt more welcomed by Charith's and his family. They made sure that we felt part of the family and had everything we needed whilst we stayed with them. They made sure that we were well feed (with amazingly tasty home cooked food) and we immediately felt at ease. 

The volunteering was absolutely fantastic, varied being able to cross over with other projects and we were able to support the local community. We could see the direct impact that COVID-19 has had on the community and the Mighty Roar so understood the importance of our volunteering work the future of all the volunteers to come. We were lucky to be able to go to the local school and nursery to spend time assisting them with hands on tasks and helping to teach English. We were greeted by the school principal and teachers with excitement to be able to work with them for the week. It was such a lovely and unique experience that we will never forget. 

In the day time we were able to help beach cleaning and restoring the turtle hatchery which included clearing groundwork, painting and setting up equipment for the nests. During the evenings we were able to experience seeing female turtles coming in from the sea to nest, which was absolutely amazing and we will never forget it. 

 I would highly recommend the Mighty Roar and wish them all the best for the future. If you would like to volunteer I would highly recommend the Sri Lankan program with Charith as you will have so much fun, experience the real life of Sri Lankan, feel safe and at home.

I had a great time in Sri Lanka, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it at all as it was my first long haul flight and with no one I knew but the family are extremely welcoming and the volunteers you meet are all 99% in the same boat as you so everyone gets on perfectly.

Depending on what course you do you may find that you have a fair few hours of downtime during the early afternoon or late afternoon so don’t panic that you’ll spend your WHOLE time working there is definitely ample opportunity to visit the local nearby towns for gift shopping or surfing.

Throw yourselves into it have fun and make friends, the more effort you put in the more you’ll get out of it without a doubt.

My three teenage children and I spent two weeks over Christmas with TMR in Sri Lanka. It was the most amazing experience that has enriched our lives in so many ways. Charith, his family and his team welcomed us into their home and taught us so much about their work with sea turtles and their beautiful country. We felt so well looked after, especially by Mamu who completely took us under his wing and would even help us cross the road! The whole team were kind, patient and generous with their time and would help us organise anything we wanted to do. The other volunteers became good friends and there was a lovely, cohesive atmosphere amongst the volunteers and the team. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough, whether going in a group or on your own. Sri Lanka is the most beautiful country, the people are so welcoming and have shown such resilience in the face of adversity. We were shown a slice of it by a wonderful group of people who I feel lucky to now call friends. Thank you Chris, Charith, Mamu and your team for facilitating this incredible experience for us. We will be back!

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with lovely friendly people. We really enjoyed our time volunteering on the turtle programme. Charith and the two main helpers were so helpful and good fun to work with.

We loved the orientation day with the jungle walk and the visit to a temple. A river safari was also organised which we all loved: the countryside was beautiful and we saw a lot of animals.

On our project we hand feed the rescue turtles, cleaned out their tank, cleared the beach and best of all took part in the night beach patrols watching for the female turtles coming inland to lay. We were only there for a very short week but were lucky to see one turtle come up lay.

In our free time we shopped and fed the turtles at Hikkaduwa, sunbathed, spend the day in Galle, took part in a quiz the volunteers organised and helped paint graffiti on a local wall (!) We made some great new friends, especially our roommate!

A week isn't very long and most of the volunteers were there for 4-8 weeks but it was still long enough to see the lovely country and appreciate the work that The Mighty Roar does. 

I highly recommend them, and say that our project is best suited to those under 40 as there is some quite physical work involved

I arrived from Sri Lanka a couple of days ago after three weeks Volunteering with the turtles. I cannot explain into words how amazing this experience is from watching turtles lay eggs on the beach and protecting them from local poachers, to feeding and cleaning out the large tanks and also completing beach cleans and chatting with the locals whilst doing this. The caring, kind, informative and support from the team there is fabulous. From the food (which I loved) to local information and learning about Sri Lankan and Buddhist cultures and lifestyle. I would go back in a shot. Mammo, tutti, hector, charith, renu and Karu are just such genuinely lovely people of touched my heart and made my experience even more special. I have wonderful memories and can’t say thank you enough.

Just fabulous - recommend without reservations for any age.

We had an amazing time staying at TMR. Charith and his family couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating. As an older than average couple at around the half century we opted for a private room, which gave us plenty of space, air con and a private bathroom. The food was wonderful, authentic and plentiful. We learnt a lot about marine conservation generally and turtle specifically from Mia, the resident expert, and really enjoyed getting an understanding of real Sri Lankan life from Karu and the gang. We had plenty of time to explore on our own but were able to contribute enough to feel satisfied we'd earnt our keep :-) We actually booked some onward travel in Sri Lanka before we left - definitely wouldn't bother next time as the family can get it all sorted for you at much better rates.

I've only just come across this review request, so my experiences are 9 months old, but I can't imagine that the Mighty Roar will have done anything except get better!

It really was the best experience I have had. If there’s one piece of advise I can give, that’s just do it. You will never regret it. It’s something that will open your eyes, make you laugh and smile, maybe make you cry, yet it will inspire you and stay with you for ever. I hope to come back next year and continue all the awesome work that has been done so far by all volunteers.

I had the best time in Sri Lanka on the turtle conservation project. From the moment I was met at the airport I felt safe and welcome. The accommodation is lovely it is basic but beds comfortable and bathroom nice you really dont need anything more and the location is great just opposite the beach which was lovely for having a swim and a sunbathe. The food was lovely and there was a mixture of rice, noodles and pasta along with different types of curry. There are 2 towns either side of the accommodation each about 10 minutes in a tuk tuk, Hikkaduwa is good for restaurants and gift shops along with good beaches, I only really went to ambalangoda for the supermarket. The turtle project itself was fantastic and releasing the hatchlings into the sea was a truly amazing experience. The beach patrols on a night time were also great and Mamu and Tuti were very knowledgeable about the turtles. Beach cleans were also good to do and was really nice to be thanked by the Sri Lankans on the beach for doing them. I also took the weekend trip to the Maldives which was simply out of this world, the local island we stayed on was beautiful and the hotel we stopped in was great. We took trips to snorkel and swim with sharks, dolphins, turtles and mantas which is something I will never forget. Charith and his family were so kind and helpful and it really felt like a home from home, I met so many great people there and can't thank the Mighty Roar enough for an amazing experience I will definitely be going back!

The sea turtle conservation program was honestly one of the best experiences of my life! Charith and his family were so friendly and welcoming, it made the place have an amazing feel to it. The accommodation is basic but very clean and the air conditioning was life saving. I really enjoyed the food because it allowed me to try local cuisine that wasn’t too spicy. Would definitely recommend it was an amazing experience!

I went on the turtle project and had a great time, even though it was off season I saw over 100 hatchlings and helped save a few full grown turtles. There was a lot more free time than I expected so didn’t plan much but I made many friends and we went out to Hikkaduwa, Galle and Marissa on a few different days so the time wasn’t wasted. Karu set up many trips during the week which you could choose to go on and it was great fun. I also did the hill country and safari weekend trip which was a lot of fun and a good experience but we weren’t told how cold/rainy it would be! Also the safari was a bit disappointing as we didn’t see many animals but was still worth it. The accommodation at the mighty roar site was basic but comfortable, the beds were nice, room was clean and showers were fine - the air con was a god send! Overall I would definitely do this again and highly recommend any other volunteers to take part.

This was the most amazing experience of my life! Being 18 and travelling alone was the scariest thing but the whole experience was made so comfortable by Chris and Charith! Charith and his family were so welcoming and having the chance to stay in a safe place with some really good food was perfect. I’m even wanting to go back again, I did the sea turtles project but got the chance to help teach English to the children too which is very rewarding. You get lots of time to do your activities but also lots of time to travel to local places and explore and relax on the stunning beach

My teenage daughter and I travelled 5 -19th July 2019 to the Sea Turtle project in Sri Lanka. We had a fantastic time! Charith and his family were so welcoming, informative and a lot of fun. I was really impressed as to how "hands on" the project was and how much responsibility volunteers were allowed to take on. We were lucky to see hatchlings released and a turtle lay eggs on the beach on two separate nights. The Full Moon celebrations were fantastic to be a part of, serving in the local community.

Food at the volunteer accommodation was lovely and there was always lots of it! Fresh bottled water was constantly available. Beds and rooms were comfortable. It was great to go on a trip over a weekend. This was a great way to see more of Sri Lanka and some of the famous sights such as The Nine Arch Bridge at Ella and Worlds End at Horton Plains, so breathtaking. 

These are experiences we will remember for ever! Thanks so much to everyone that made our trip amazing. UK Office Team, Charith & family, Mammu and the local team and of course our fellow travellers who quickly all became friends.

This project allowed children and my youngest daughter Lucy was 15 at the time, as well as offering a one week programme – we only had time for the Maldives trip and a week’s volunteering so it was perfect for us. The whole set up was so professional, from start to finish. 

We would 100% recommend The Mighty Roar; we have even looked at doing another project in the next year. It is a great way of meeting new people and visiting somewhere new at a reasonable cost. I would also say do the additional activities and weekends that are on offer. You get to see new places in a safe way too. We would both absolutely recommend the Maldives trip too – possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Just returned from turtle conservation in Sri Lanka - we were really looked after before trip and during. We learnt so much and experienced so much. I still watch videos on Facebook and will the baby turtles to make it into the sea! We arrived at the airport at the crack of dawn, The Mighty Roar made pick up so easy - really helpful when travelling with children (or on your own!). Accommodation is basic (you're in Sri Lanka and not a 5 star hotel!),beds were really comfortable, food was mainly Sri Lankan (you could go to local town for more choice). We are hoping to return!!!!

I had the best 2 weeks staying with Charith and his family, everyone was so welcoming and friendly (including the cats Pudding and Sphinx). My days were very varied, some days I would have early beach patrol (checking the beach for tracks that may have been missed during the night), painting posters/boards for teaching in the afternoon, burying turtle eggs, making nets to go over where we buried the turtle eggs, beach night patrols (seeing turtles laying the eggs on the beach) and hatchery shifts (checking if any eggs have hatched and then setting the hatchlings free).

I absolutely loved teaching the children everyday, as exhausted as I was, I just couldn’t not go and see them everyday. I have never taught before so it was a challenge for me at first, but was definitely a great experience.

I haven’t volunteered anywhere else apart from Sri Lanka, but I would definitely recommend this company to anyone considering it, everything runs so smoothly, there’s always someone there for you to talk to if needed and all the staff are so nice.

Our visit to Sri Lanka on the Sea Turtle volunteering program, was nothing but incredible (other than a little hot and sweaty) The team were welcoming and helpful from the start, and made sure we were able to make the most of our trip from the get go, helping us to book any extra trips out. I'd never though of volunteering on the teaching side whilst there, but after the first visit to the school, we were absolutely hooked. This is definitely a program, that if you're willing to dive head first into, and get totally stuck into, will reward you in a million and one ways. The coordinators, family, children, other volunteers, and of course turtles, made this a holiday of a lifetime, and I cannot thank The Mighty Roar enough for allowing us to have this opportunity.

I had 3 weeks in Sri Lanka and it was incredible from day one a massive warm Welcome from Mia, Simon, Chris, the current volunteers and most importantly Charith and his Amazing Family. On the first full day we had a tour of the local area which was so so nice!!! The beach across the road is like something off a post code A thing I was wary of before coming out was poachers on the beach when we where also on their (we always had a family member or friend with us so we were never on our own at night) , we came across them many times on our visit, no weapons or aggression just friendly locals trying to make a bit of money.

We went in the hope to see plenty of sea turtles and Hatchlings and we were fortunate enough to see loads of them more than I was expecting if I am honest it was incredible.  The food was always awesome but quite similar every week if you want a change it’s only a 15minute tuktuk ride from hikkaduwa which has really good

Unfortunately we where in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday when the events happened but I can’t stress enough how safe the family and even the locals made us feel for the rest of our stay so I can’t thank them enough. It was amazing been part of such a big project and exciting to see the visions on where it is heading, I can’t wait to get back out there hopefully I won’t have to wait too long

Such an amazing experience and so rewarding. Not only are you part of a team but you become part of The Mighty Roar family. We travelled as a family for 2 weeks, on the turtle project which was lots of fun with everyone having the chance to get involved as much or as little as possible.

The food can be quite repetitive, but if you fancy something different you don’t need to go very far.

Sri Lanka is such a beautiful country I would recommend it to anyone, such friendly people.

Sri Lanka, it gets in your blood. So here we are three months on from my trip to Sri Lanka where I spent the best 4 weeks of my life. A real sense of achievement and I still get excited talking about it now. There is no better feeling in the world than watching a hundred or so baby turtle hatchlings scrambling along the shoreline to the sea, the determination and drive to reach the ocean, it never gets old. I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

I wish I was there longer but I still got to enjoy Sri Lanka and was lucky enough to see turtles and hatching in a short period of time. Everybody was really nice and helpful. We travelled to Sri Lanka as a family with my 8 year old son, never having volunteered before and not knowing what to expect. I can honestly say we had the best experience!

The Mighty Roar allowed my son to be actively involved in all the tasks from beach cleaning to releasing hatchlings which was an fantastic experience for all of us. Sri Lanka is an amazing country but the The Might Roar made it special for us.

If your looking for a feet up lounger holiday where you can take a selfie with a Turtle then this is NOT for you, however,if you’re looking for an adventure which involves some rewarding work with great people and an incredible host family this really is for you. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Turtle experience with The Mighty Roar to anyone just go with an open mind and get involved.
