Seeing the healthcare

Observing & assisting in practical ways

I travelled and volunteered in Ghana towards the end of 2022 and absolutely loved my time there - I would definitely recommend it to others. At first I was quite scared as I was travelling with my friend without our family for the first time, but the staff met us at the airport and were very welcoming and took good care of us for the whole trip.

"If you're considering going to Ghana, just do it! You won’t regret it and I would definitely go back!"

I choose to do the medical programme as I hoped to be able to gain a better perspective on the healthcare in Ghana and I wanted to be able to gain hands on medical experience and see what goes into running a hospital. All of the hospital staff were very welcoming and I would like to especially mention everyone within the maternity ward.

For someone who has not been to university yet or have any other medical experience, I was able to learn a lot and also help out in basic but practical ways - something that will look great on my CV and any potential education application.

During my placement everyone stayed in Busua, which itself is a lovely village were all of the local community are so friendly. There was lots to each evening and as there were lots of other volunteers it was a great social experience.

If you're considering going to Ghana, just do it! You won’t regret it and I would definitely go back!
