Vietnam Hanoi Medical Experience

Join us in Hanoi to gain valuable medical experience in a busy hospital. Our programme offers a a diverse and first hand experience of the healthcare system in Vietnam, where you will get the chance to help in a variety of different departments.

By following and observing local medical professionals, you will be able to learn how diagnosis and treatment processes differ to your home country and also understand the large restraints the healthcare system faces in a developing country – with severe overcrowding, long wait times and simply not enough resources to provide adequate care to everyone that needs it.

Background to the medical programme

Thanks to the recent economic developments and the political reforms back in 1986, the health care system in Vietnam has seen some significant improvements. With more hospitals built and more focus being provided on the quality of care, there has been an increase in life expectancies at birth and also a decrease in infant mortality rates.

However, despite these advances, there still remains problems. As things stand, there is a severe shortage of trained staff, with on average just 8 physicians per 10,000 patients. When compared to the United Kingdom in the same period, there is an average of 28 physicians and the statistics for Vietnam are also significantly lower when compared to other countries across South East Asia. This has resulted in too many patients for the medical facilities provided and is an ever-increasing problem in the country.

During your time in Vietnam you will be placed in a busy hospital in the capital city of Hanoi. Here you will have a fantastic opportunity to experience the healthcare system in a developing country. You will be exposed to a variety of interesting cases and different processes and techniques that will increase your knowledge and background within this field.

Where will I be volunteering?

Whilst in Vietnam you will be volunteering at a government hospital in the capital city. You will have the opportunity to help in a variety of different departments . Transport to and from the hospital is not included as part of the programme fee, but the local team will ensure you are happy with the route and transport to get there - please budget £3 ($4) per day.

Ha Dong General Hospital – Established in 1910, Ha Dong General hospital is a public hospital under the Hanoi Department of Health and one of the first class General hospitals in the capital. The hospital became the Municipal General Hospital of the Capital Health Sector.

With more than a century of operation, Ha Dong General Hospital has achieved many significant achievements and is widely regarded as an indispensable part of the region's health system. Since its opening in the early 20th Century the hospital has made great contributions to protecting and caring for people's health, with recognition from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Health and Hanoi People's Committee.

Currently, the hospital has 650 beds, 44 departments and more than 800 officials, including a team of experienced doctors with 54% being PhDs, masters, specialists II and doctors specialty.

We can place participants in the following departments: Rehabilitation department, Emergency department, Traditional Medicine department, Cardiology department, Physiotherapy, General Internal Medicine department, General Surgery, Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department, Pediatrics department, Infectious Diseases department and Intensive Care Unit.

Student elective placements

Our medical programmes are primarily aimed at university students who are looking to undertake their elective placement abroad. The following elective placements are available for Vietnam: medical, nursing and physiotherapy.

We host many students every year and have built up strong relationships with most universities around the United Kingdom and Ireland who actively recommend us. We also host students from around the world.

Once you have signed up to the programme, you will gain access to your personal My Trip account. Within here you can specify which clinical elective you wish to undertake along with preference on departments. The TMR Vietnam team will then have everything planned and organised for your unique rotation when you arrive.

The Vietnamese team and international team based in the UK can help complete any paperwork required, provide risk assessments and sign off on hours to ensure the placement complies with your university requirements.

What is my role?

Whilst on your medical elective, you will get the chance to shadow and assist trained professionals in a busy hospital setting. The doctors and nurses will be happy to answer any questions to expand your medical knowledge and help you gain a real insight into the healthcare system in Vietnam. You will get involved in the day-to-day activities of the hospital through observing and, where possible, helping out in simple but practical ways.

During your time shadowing and assisting in the hospital you may witness many diseases, illness and ailments which are not normally found in the United Kingdom. These may include health defects consequent of Agent Orange, tuberculosis, respiratory infection, malnutrition and tropical diseases.

You can choose to spend time in a variety of different areas of the hospital and we recommend a mix of 3-5 departments (depending on your duration) to give you a broad overview of the healthcare system and different hospital settings. A full overview of available departments can be found above. Our local team will do their best to accommodate any specific requests but please note, this cannot always be guaranteed.

What will a typical day look like?

As a medical volunteer you will typically be volunteering at the hospital within the hours of 8.30am - 4.30pm, Monday - Friday. As you can imagine in a busy hospital setting, no two days will be the same and your timetable may be subject to changes depending on the ever-changing scenarios at the hospital.

The hospital is around a 20 minute drive from the accommodation. You can either make use of the public transport or go by private taxi, with the cost being split between volunteers. The local team can advise on this in your first few days.

At the end of every day, volunteers meet back at the accommodation to share stories from the day, enjoy dinner or head out to explore the city.

Where will I be staying?

This is your chance to volunteer in the bustling Capital city of Hanoi, based in the North of the country. Teaming with history and culture, this is a great opportunity to experience Vietnam alongside volunteering.

You'll have plenty of opportunities to explore the city at your leisure. Whether you want to have a gentle stroll down to the market, try some mouth-watering street food or are after a more lively atmosphere in the touristy areas, then Hanoi has it all!

Other things to consider

University Students Only - Our Vietnam medical experience welcomes people who are currently studying something relevant at university and are looking to undertake their elective placement. I'm afraid we are unable to host trained professionals or anyone who is not currently studying something relevant.

Departments / Specialities - We would recommend students who are interested in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology or midwifery look at our medical projects in Sri Lanka, Tanzania or Ghana.

Start dates - We have standard start dates in place to ensure the arrival processes run smoothly and that we have larger groups arriving together. However, we appreciate that universities have their own set dates / periods to which you need to undertake your elective placement. With this in mind, we can of course be flexible with our start dates and we would recommend getting in touch so we can provide further information.

Return airport transfer - Your transfer back to the airport after your placement has finished is not included as part of the programme fee. However, you can easily arrange this with the local team whilst in Vietnam for a small additional cost - which can be split between anyone else travelling at the same time.

Level of involvement - Although your role at the hospitals is largely observational, the majority of volunteers are assigned basic hands-on tasks such as taking blood pressure and blood sugar levels, dressing wounds, administering IV injections, recording temperatures and more. Please note we cannot guarantee your level of involvement and this will be at the sole discretion of your supervisor in-country.

Weekends and free time - You will have every weekend off from volunteering and this is the perfect time to explore everything this beautiful country has to offer. You are more than welcome to simply relax around the accommodation and enjoy all of the amenities and attractions the capital has to offer, but most volunteers will use this time to travel and see the country. Further down this page you will come across many suggestions and ideas on where you could go. Alternatively, if you are looking to see as much of the country as possible during this time, travel with other volunteers and be accompanied by one of our local team members, then you may be interested in one or more of the organised weekend trips we run.

Undertaking my medical elective in Vietnam

  • March 2024
I signed up for the medical programme in Vietnam. I chose Vietnam as it was a country I’d always wanted to go to as it looked to exciting. I was on the programme for 3 weeks and was able to experience different medical and surgical specialties in a Vietnamese hospital. I also had the opportunity to speak with university students studying, which was very interesting. Overall I would highly recommend taking your elective placement with The Mighty Roar. You will learn so much, make lots of great friends and have plenty of opportunities to travel and explore the country.

Volunteering on my gap year in Vietnam & Bali

  • January 2024
As a part of my gap year, I travelled to Vietnam and Bali. It was one of the best experiences, I met so many new people, learnt so much and would 100% recommend it to anyone! My journey started in Vietnam, where I was able to help within the children's disabled centre for 2 weeks. My next destination was Bali, which involved exploring for 10 days as a group , then 2 weeks volunteering. Overall, it was a trip of a lifetime! I got to experience different cultures in Vietnam and Bali whilst having the opportunity to help.
