An incredible experience helping on the childcare programme in Sri Lanka.
I signed up for the two-week childcare program in Sri Lanka with The Mighty Roar last year because my friend had participated and encouraged me to join. Initially, I was a bit nervous, as I had never considered traveling to that part of the world. However, the smooth pre-departure support quickly put me at ease.
The travel handbook provided a wealth of information, answering nearly every question I had, from what to pack and recommended vaccinations to manners and interacting with locals. Any additional questions I had were promptly addressed via WhatsApp or email.
"For any solo traveler, I highly recommend The Mighty Roar. They make you feel at home and safe. "
I remember arriving at Colombo airport and feeling slightly overwhelmed. However, I quickly felt at ease when I saw a group of people like me standing with a friendly-looking man holding a large poster with The Mighty Roar logo.
We all fell asleep on the bus to the centre and were greeted with a lovely meal and some free time. Our group went to the beach, which was just across the road, where we chatted and got to know one another. It was such a lovely group of people.
I loved helping out in the nursery, where we sang, danced, played with the children, and assisted them with their arts and crafts as they learned English. It was so much fun and a privilege to help out in the classroom.
In our free time, we explored the local area, visited a lovely hotel with a pool overlooking the sea, and enjoyed relaxing there. We went out for delicious, inexpensive meals as a group and also hung out at the centre. Over the weekend, we took a day trip to Galle, a nearby town. The bus ticket cost only £0.17! Exploring the old town was so much fun.
Volunteering at the centre was a fantastic experience. I made great friends, some of whom I regularly meet up with back home in London. I loved my room, which was cozy despite having seven of us girls in one room; we all got along so well.
One of my favourite memories was helping the turtle team release baby turtles into the ocean. That was one of those pinch-me, bucket-list moments that didn’t feel real!
For any solo traveler, I highly recommend The Mighty Roar. They make you feel at home and safe. The experience was incredible, and I have memories that will last me a lifetime!
