An experience that words cannot truly describe

I spent summer 2023 volunteering in Ghana on childcare and medical programmes, and the experience was something words cannot describe. The local team were amazing, especially Dinah who helped us with whatever we needed. A taxi into town was arranged in minutes and she helped us organise getting back to the airport.

"The Mighty Roar were amazing from start to finish, and I couldn’t recommend them enough. Busua, no doubt I will be back!"

The people of Busua were some of the friendliest I have ever met. We loved getting to know the locals, learning their card games down at the beach and taking surfing lessons. There were activities organised every day after placement, from trips to the markets, coconut tree climbs, boat trips to the beautiful island off the coast and so much more.

The medical programme was so insightful with the hospital staff really making our learning a priority. We were able to get hands on and had the opportunity to sit in in the operating theatres. I also got to visit both the private and public schools, I worked across different aged classes over the month but spent most of my time in the childcare class. I got to know each of the children really well and built some really strong relationships ( I can’t wait to get back to see them!).

I was brought up to know that I was lucky and that there are a lot of people who didn’t get the luxury that I had of food on the table 3 times a day, water whenever I wanted, toys at Christmas, books for school and the list goes on. It was however hard to understand the extent of this until I worked in a school with 3 year old children begging you for water because they’re thirsty. Children wearing the same clothes everyday of the week because they have nothing else. A school with no books, toys, pencils, pens, toilets.

The time I spent in Ghana has taught me so much, I’ve been blessed to meet some of the best people from friends in my fellow volunteers to the happiest little children of Busua who have the most heartbreaking stories to tell.

This experience has been one of the best and most rewarding months of my life and to anyone who is lucky enough and gets the opportunity to do something like this I can’t strongly enough recommend you take it! There were of course ups and downs over the month but the days off spent singing karaoke on the beach and putting smiles on the cutest little faces made the experience something special.

The past month has taught me more than school ever did, I am going home knowing I definitely see things differently now. The Mighty Roar were amazing from start to finish, and I couldn’t recommend them enough. Busua, no doubt I will be back!
