Looking to volunteer with your family this summer? Read all about our recent life changing trip to Sri Lanka
I have three children aged 13, 10 and 7 and this year has been life changing to say the least. After some health issues at the beginning of the year I decided to do something incredible in the summer with the kids, and I’m so grateful we found The Mighty Roar!
"The Sri Lankan people are incredible, The Mighty Roar are awesome and I would highly recommend to anybody travelling to use this company."
We have not long come back from the most amazing five weeks of our lives and are already planning our next volunteer experience. Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful places I think I’ve ever been to and the opportunities we were given were incredible. It was also an incredible learning opportunity for my children.
We started on the turtle program, and we were lucky enough on our first day to see 77 turtles hatch and to release them into the sea. We swam with turtles in the sea, we went to the turtle sanctuary hospital, we did beach cleans and beach patrols. There is something incredibly special about the beach patrol at midnight and something very exciting about swimming in the waves with a turtle that weighs twice as much as a human adult!
Accommodation at The Mighty Roar is like a big extended family. Ayomi and her family are the best and my children are still talking about getting extra ice cream from Chutti, feeding the dogs with Hector, and beach patrol with Mammu.
My eldest child also participated in the dog program and she absolutely loved every second. She was able to go to a local vets and see an operation to try and save a dogs life. She still talks about Beach Mum and Beach Dad; the dogs that live on the beach opposite. She is determined to go back when she finishes her GCSE’s with a fried and has started saving already.
We even managed to experience the kindergarten and teaching programs which my youngest two really enjoyed, despite being younger than some of the children.
I was apprehensive about travelling solo with three children given the political climate and my health issues but I can honestly say it was the best, most liberating and educational experience I could have offered my children and we experienced no problems whatsoever.
The Sri Lankan people are incredible, The Mighty Roar are awesome and I would highly recommend to anybody travelling with a family to use this company.
